About Our Store

After discovering, to my horror, back in 2001 the actual contents of most commercial pet foods, I made it my mission to open a “health food store for dogs and cats” so I could help to educate my customers so their pets could live longer, be healthier, and have a better quality of life. When the space next to my grooming shop came up for rent, I knew it was meant to be, and so Healthy Paws was born and because we have been so well received we knew our next step was to broaden our horizons so we could reach as many people as possible.

Meet Carol Anne

Our objective here at Healthy Paws is to give control back to the owner when it comes to their pets' health and well being. If you're interested in having a healthier pet, having your pet live longer, having your pet live the best quality of life possible and possibly saving thousands of dollars in vet bills over the life of your pet, then click on the links located throughout our web site and rediscover a wholistic approach to caring for your companions.

I want the owner to take control back of their pets lives so they can make informed decisions when it comes to their pets nutritional and health needs. Not rely on the veterinarians who are sometimes motivated by the pharmaceutical and food companies instead of what's in the best interest of the pet. Very sad, but very true!

About Us

90% of our customers' pets have skin and health problems of one sort or another. It’s always bothered me and I knew that the antibiotics and steroids that were always given to the pets not only was not helping, but making things considerably worse in the long run.

I had five Miniature Schnauzers of my own and throughout their lives they each had their share of skin problems, heart problems, kidney stones and various other ailments, and these were top quality dogs and a couple of them were show dogs. Three of them had to be put down because of serious illnesses long before “their time”.

They had all been raised conventionally and given annual vaccines and fed what I thought at the time was the best quality of food money could buy, I did everything possible to ensure their good health, or so I thought, including spending literally thousands of dollars at the veterinarians office.

A couple of years passed after they had all gone on to a better place and I decided to get a Doberman. I also decided that this time I was going to “do it differently”, especially since the larger breeds tend to not live as long. “Mike” came to me in September of 1999. At about six months of age his hair started to fall out on his back end. That’s when I started the serious research and discovered what was “really” in most commercial pet foods.

I also discovered how detrimental vaccines were to dogs and cats. I sought out alternative health care for my pet and found a wonderful homeopathic doctor who had been a veterinarian for many years prior to becoming a homeopath. I switched Mike over to a human grade quality dog food, making certain that I rotate his food every time I bought a new bag and he went through a detoxification of sorts to get the vaccines out of his system. His hair started growing back within a couple of months of the treatment. He now eats a raw diet made up of various protein sources, ground bone, vegetables, fruits and vitamins, and the only vaccines he receives are of the natural kind, and will do absolutely no harm to his system.

He’s seven years old and going strong! Somewhere in all of my discoveries I started to get a little angry, here were all these so called brilliant veterinarians and all these customers spending thousands and our pets were getting sicker and sicker and living very short lives.

How could this be happening?

How simple is it to have your pet on a good quality pet food, this would be the building block for the rest of the animals life. Yet the majority of veterinarians are pushing substandard food that is of little or no nutritional value and the foods in the grocery stores, discount stores, and most pet stores is pretty much the same: toxic, unfit for human consumption, garbage!!!! Not to mention the annual vaccines and how harmful, NOT helpful they are to our four legged companions. This is when I decided to open “Healthy Paws”. Our pets give us unconditional love and the least we can do is truly understand what we’re putting in their bodies and the effects that nutrition or the lack there-of can have on their health. It's important the pet owner realize how critical nutrition is to both good and poor health, and by spending a little more on a good quality food now and by making sure they rotate their pets food they could save literally thousands on vet bills later.

We wanted the store to be a reflection of the items we carry so we started by building beautiful, natural wood racking to display our products. We also knew we had to have an edge, something to set us apart from everyone else because the store is small in size, 700 square feet. We manage that through very personal customer service. Setting up a diet for each pets’ individual needs. We keep customers records of what they purchase so when they come in for more food we can look it up for them so they can rotate to another food. Making certain that they can call us for advice for any reason and if we don’t know the answer, we’ll get it for them.

We also call them two to three weeks after their initial visit to see how their pet is doing. Many of our customers’ pets have been on substandard foods for years and we help to ensure that the transition will be a smooth one for the optimal comfort to the pet and the human as well. We give them literature to read on what’s really in most commercial pet foods and also on the effects of vaccines and give them links to web sites to they can do their own research if they care to.

We have a seminar once a month given by a local homeopathic doctor to answer all their questions on pet nutrition and health care. How we can learn to do it better, for less money, and have a healthier pet for it. I know I sleep easier at night not worrying about my pets’ health. Our goal is to give control back to the consumer when it comes to their pets’ care.

We carry a variety of foods so that everyone can feed their pet a healthy diet, including dry kibble, canned food, & commercial raw diets. We also carry a variety of treats, supplements, toys, shampoos and much more, and if we don’t carry it, we’ll either get it for them or tell them where they can get it.

When a customer comes in to the store with a smile from ear to ear telling us how much better their pet is doing, no scratching, more energy, and just happier all around, I know this is where I’m meant to be.
